Facial Reference Photography

Reference photographs are useful or even required for multiple steps of the digital acting workflow, such as modeling and digital actor tuning. The following are sets of reference photographs that are frequently taken.

Orthogonal Facial Poses

To generate reference material for the digital actor tuning, you will want to define (for invented characters) or record (for realistic characters) a number of orthogonal facial poses that exercise the most relevant facial deformations.

Anatomy and Expression Reference

Muscle Groups

  • Orbicularis oculi - muscle ring around the eye.
  • Orbicularis oris - muscle ring around the mouth.
  • Nasalis - muscles over top the nose.
  • Zygomaticus major - muscle connecting from the mouth corner along the cheek bone.
  • Zygomaticus minor - muscle connecting from the upper lip (side) to the outer corner of the eye.
  • Frontalis - major muscle of the forehead.
  • Platysma - neck muscles extending up to lower jaw.

Folds and Wrinkles

  • Commissural Fold - The fold dropping down from the sides of the mouth towards the chin, activated when the corners of the mouth are pulled down.
