Shaders (XSISDK)
There are two main types of Shaders: Mental Ray Shaders and Real-Time Shaders.
XSI ships with many Shaders and users can also write Custom Shaders. In both cases the shader comprises of a SPDL file, a Preset file and a .DLL or .SO

Shader Custom UI
Shaders are still based on SPDL files, but custom layout and SPDL logic can be added to get similar effects to what can be done with Custom Properties PPGs.
The Media:RTSUIDemo.zip example serves as an example Real-Time Shader that is similar to the PSetUIDemo example.
