Server ID and Server Type
Server ID:
Each computer system is unique, much like a fingerprint. The Server ID is similar in that it too has a unique fingerprint which makes no one Server ID the same. Licenses are tied to a specific Server ID for which only they will be valid. Your license server's Server ID is derived from the Server Type.
Server Type:
Server Type is the protocol or device which tells the license manager how to extract the appropriate Server ID. The current server type setting is indicated at the bottom-right corner of the license manager interface. There are two supported server types for the license manager: SLP for dongle-less licensing and SI0 for dongle licensing.
SLP – Softimage License Protocol
SLP is a hardware-based lock that uses data elements from your computer and its Windows registry to create a unique Server ID.
SI0 – USB Dongles
SI0 tells the license manager that you are using a hardware key (an external dongle). Inside this dongle is a chip called an iButton, which carries a unique value from which the Server ID is read.
Changing your server type
You can change your server type from the following places in the license manager:
- Open the license manager and choose Server > Change Server Type to SI0 or SLP (depending on the current server type setting).
- During the licensing process (using the "get license" wizard), when the License Assignment window opens, you can change the Server Type by clicking the Change Type button to toggle between SI0 and SLP.
- If you are using an existing legacy serial dongle, you can configure the most current license manager to recognize it as a COM server type when it is connected in one of the communication ports.
