Output to Monitor Using an Avid Mojo (Digital Output Device)

Table of contents

Discontinued Feature

The support for the Avid Mojo is no longer available in Autodesk Softimage. The Autodesk team cannot provide support for the Avid Mojo. No output monitor solution is currently available for Autodesk Softimage.

Avid Mojo™

Avid Mojo™ is a portable Digital Nonlinear Accelerator that allows you to output hardware and software rendered effects from XSI to a monitor in realtime. When you have an Avid Mojo, or other Avid digital output device, connected to your XSI workstation, you can output content from XSI to a monitor using the Mojo to accelerate the display of effects.

Image:Si_ue_note.png The digital output device will not work if XSI is installed on a network using a UNC path, such as when installed with the XSI Client Setup. You can install XSI on a mapped drive to work around this issue.

Installing/Updating the DIO Device Driver and Firmware

Before you can output to a monitor via a digital output device, make sure that the Digital Input/Output (DIO) device driver is properly installed and up to date. When you first launch XSI with Digital IO support, it may also request that you update your firmware.

  • If XSI is the only application that interfaces with the Avid Mojo, you can install the DIO driver using XSI's Custom install option.
  • If XSI is installed, on the same machine as an Avid editing application (such as Avid XpressPro), use the DIO driver that gets installed with that application. Programs requiring different versions of the same digital output device driver cannot co-exist peacefully on the same machine.

Image:Si_ue_note.png The driver files for Avid digital output devices are called Flamethrower.inf and Flamethrower.sys. They are located in the <System drive>\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\ subdirectory of the installation path.

To update your DIO device driver

  1. Close all running sessions of XSI.
  2. From the Windows task bar, choose Start > Control Panel > System.
  3. On the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button. In the device manager, expand the Sound, video & game controllers node.
  4. Double-click the icon for the Avid Technology digital output device to open its Properties dialog box and switch to the Driver tab.
  5. Click the Update Driver button.
  6. From the Hardware Update Wizard, choose Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
  7. Choose Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install. Then click Next and choose the latest driver.
If no drivers are listed, click Have Disk. Then Browse to the Program Files\Common Files\Avid\ subdirectory of the installation path, choose Flamethrower.inf, and click OK.
  8. When you first launch XSI with Digital IO support, it may request that you update your firmware. Simply follow the instructions to perform the update. Once the firmware is updated, you’ll need to power the digital output device off and on again and restart XSI for the changes to take effect.

Outputting to a Monitor From XSI

Once you've connected your Avid digital output device, updated its DIO device driver and firmware, and hooked up your monitor, you can choose an XSI view to output to the montior. You choose a view from the Digital IO Output (Monitor)tab of the Display Options property editor.

To output XSI views to a monitor

  1. From the main menu, choose File > Preferences to open the preferences window. Click the Display icon to open the Display options property editor.
  2. From the Digital IO Output tab, choose the Monitor Type to which you’re outputting content. This can be either NTSC or PAL.
  3. Choose an XSI view to output via the Avid digital output device by setting the View Output to one of the following:
    • Disabled: nothing is output to the monitor.
    • 3D View A: the display in viewport A is output to the monitor.
    • 3D View B: the display in viewport B is output to the monitor.
    • 3D View C: the display in viewport C is output to the monitor.
    • 3D View D: the display in viewport D is output to the monitor.
    • 3D Auto A/B/C/D: the viewport that has focus is output to the monitor. Click a viewport to give it focus.
    • Render View: outputs the rendered image from the Render Preview or, the Render View when rendering an image to disk.
The image/frame is not displayed on the monitor until the last tile is rendered.
    • FX View: the content of the FX Viewer is output to the monitor.
If no operator is being previewed, no image is output.
    • Image Clip View: the image clip view, as seen in the Image Clip Viewer, is output to the monitor.
