License Error 104

Message:

The license manager is unable to perform this task because it cannot modify the license server Windows service.

This usually occurs when you are logged into an account that does not have the administrative privileges required to modify services on this system. Please log in as an administrator before attempting this operation again.


Symptoms:

When you attempt to start or stop the license server, you may see the message above, in the following cases:

  • Most of the time it's because you do not have administrative privileges on the computer.
  • The license server service has not been installed or it has been configured incorrectly.

Solution:

  • First, verify that you are logged in as administrator on your computer.
  • Second, reinstall the license server service. Do the following:
    1. Open the license manager: choose Start > Programs > Softimage Products > License Manager.
    2. From the top menu, choose Tools > Uninstall License Server Service.
    3. Now, from the same menu, choose Tools > Install License Server Service.
    4. This process ensures that the Windows service is installed correctly and is pointing to the appropriate executables.
  • Third, check that you do not have a third-party security software or process monitor that might prevent Windows services from starting.
